sui testimonium
Born, raised, and still residing in New York City. I completed a PhD in music composition at the CUNY Graduate Center, now pursuing a PhD in philosophy at Stony Brook University.
My compositions tend toward understatement, concentration, and restraint. They seek intensity of expression, clarity of idea, and a sense of formal necessity. Composing, for me, is an attempt to solve a puzzle without a guiding image.
My study in philosophy centers on the Frankfurt School, particularly Adorno, and German Idealism, especially Hegel. I am animated by questions in aesthetics, logic and metaphysics, and the philosophy of history. Many of my philosophical interests are inseparable from my concerns as a composer. A perennial question at the heart of both is how disparate particulars can possibly form a coherent whole without being subordinated to heteronomous plan.
I’m also a teacher. I believe that education should help students develop themselves toward autonomy, and I hope that my work in the classroom contributes, however modestly, to this end.
